We Can Do It!

This link went around my Facebook feed last week, I believe originally from Stephanie, and I loved it for obvious reasons: it’s about a mom showing her daughter that, yes, women can (and do!) work on cars.

I could quote from the blog post, but really, go read it yourself.  It’s pretty short and we’ll wait for you.

I just absolutely love this article.  When the daughter said, “girls don’t work on cars!”, the mom didn’t get huffy.  She didn’t just tell her daughter that that’s not true and leave it at that.  She got her daughter involved and showed her how to work on the car; the daughter has now had a personal experience of a girl working on a car.

This is so important and so much better than just telling the daughter that, hey, somewhere, sure, women work on cars.

Obviously if Kira ever comes to me and says, “mom, girls can’t do brain surgery”, we probably won’t grab the nearest kitchen knife and go looking for a volunteer to cut open (though, hey, if anyone is interested in a discounted operation…), but in that situation there are other ways to provide the personal experience.  Visiting a female surgeon, for example, or sitting in on a college class.

During my years as an English nerd, we were told over and over to “show, don’t tell”.  I hope I remember to do that as a parent, too, and have a daughter who knows that girls can ride motorcycles and turn wrenches and play hockey.

(I know I’ve used this picture before but it seemed topical! 😉 )

Ride to Casa de Fruta

The weather was pretty nice yesterday, and I had a 3pm appointment to be back for, so I decided to head out onto the freeway in order to get in the miles.  I’ve often told people that the Ninjette is fine on the interstate, so let’s put my money where my mouth is, shall we?

The interstate down to south San Jose was just fine.  I’m sure I went the safe and legal speed limit and got around the morning commute traffic without any trouble.

I hopped on the backroads in San Jose and started weaving south down into Watsonville.

Mom motorcycling, part 1

OK, I’ve been promising to write about my thoughts on “mom motorcycling” for a while; let’s see how far I can get during morning naptime. 😉  Disclaimer:  Lots of blather ahead and no photos of interesting scenery.  Proceed at your own risk.

There are two categories of “riding while mothering” that have taken more prep and/or mental fortitude than I’d expected: one mental and one physical.  We’ll chat about the mental one first.

When I started riding again after Kira was born, the mental issues surprised me much more than the physical ones.  I think this is because I had spent some time considering the physical limitations that I might bump up against (not only post-partum discomfort but the logistics of breastfeeding/pumping and the obvious tangible issue of “what do I do with the baby while I’m out riding?”).  I hadn’t really considered the emotional and mental limitations.

Ride to Mt. Tamalpais

I got a text message this morning from a relative in Wisconsin, saying in part, “It just started snowing.”   I mention this because it was 80F and sunny here today.  Now, to balance things out, our monthly mortgage payment in the Bay Area is more than the TOTAL amount of rent I paid my senior year of college, but did I mention 80F?  And sunny?

OK, honestly, this is unseasonable weather here too.  Normally it’s gray and rainy and is supposed to be so later this week.  So I took advantage of August-in-November and went on a long ride today.

After a nice breakfast at The Depot Cafe, I hopped on I-280 and headed north.

A quick ride up to SF

As luck would have it, yesterday afternoon did wind up being rain-free after all, so I got a short ride in.  Hooray!  I only had about 2 hours, so I just hightailed it up to San Francisco for the current Sport-Touring.net photo tag (the Dutch windmill in Golden Gate Park) and then rode home along the coast.

Photo tags work as follows:  someone posts a picture of their bike with a landmark/object/what have you.  The photo is “tagged” when another person takes a picture of their bike with the same object.  That new person then posts up the next object.

So, my first stop was to get the next photo.  I felt confident that no one was going to tag the windmill ahead of me, considering the previous tag (Sutro Towers) had stayed up for eight months.
