Wind Dancers 2004 Pacific Rally

Wind Dancers Pacific Rally: September 24 - 26, 2004

Continued from Part 2...

We "awoke", in the sense that we hadn't really ever slept, early the next morning. Somehow we still managed to be the last people to arrive for coffee at the hospitality tent -- these gals are early risers, I tell you! We all puttered around, drinking caffeine and eating bagels, muffins, etc. Most people were unnervingly cheery; I was reassured that they'd slept well on Saturday night because they were all exhausted from not sleeping at all on Friday night. Camping: the great sleep deprivation ploy.

So, we all packed up and got ready to leave. Nothing terribly interesting happened, other than Linda borrowing Karen's Virago to take for a spin around the campsite. Linda's bike Arnie was being its usual tempermental self, so she had to drive up; she returned from her mini trip on the Virago with a huge grin.

After packing up, Peter and I wandered over to the KOA petting farm area. I'm a sucker for touristy stuff, so I was all excited to pet the donkeys and goats. They didn't disappoint: one friendly fellow even climbed up the fence to lick my elbow!

Making new friends.

Pretty donkey!

Eventually, we wandered back to the bikes and headed south towards home. While stuck at a red light somewhere in Golden Gate Park, Peter leaned over and asked if I wanted to take Highway 35 down the peninsula. This sounded great to me -- I'd never taken it all the way south from San Francisco. We hopped on 35 and enjoyed a nice, windy, low-traffic ride all the way down to Alice's Restaurant. We were both riding a lot slower than usual -- I could tell that the lack of sleep was really impacting my reaction time, so I kept my riding well within my limits for the day. Peter led this section, so it was nice to relax and take it easy. By the time we stopped for lunch at Alice's, we were both ready for a break and some food.

We immediately bumped into a guy we vaguely knew, Joe, in the parking lot. Joe and his friend (roommate?) Justin decided to join us for lunch; as we walked up the steps, I immediately saw more familiar faces: Andrew (ZX11Andrew), Phil (SoCal), and Matt (lycono) from Sport-Touring.net. Phil just moved to the area from Southern California, so they were off introducing him to the Santa Cruz Mountains. Naturally, we all joined them, so we wound up with quite a little group for lunch.

Because I suck and should be destroyed, I didn't actually get any pictures of us at lunch. But, in true ST.n fashion, we sat around eating and trading lies and other outrageous stories. The theme for the lunch was "strange places I've been arrested"; Phil won with his "Norwegian jail" story. The moral that we all took away from lunch was that apparently, it's best to just not travel anywhere with Phil.

After lunch, Peter and I were pretty wiped out, so we headed straight down Highway 84 to 280 and slabbed it back home. It ended up being a ~275 mile weekend -- not bad for just over 24 hours! We had a super time, and as always, the Pacific Rally rocked. Thanks to everyone for a wonderful weekend! Now if I can just get over this sinus infection... :)
