This is as easy as it gets. No cables, no nothing. Basically, the bottom
curved part of the lever hits the grey circle that's just above it. In
hydraulic braking, this generates pressure which causes the disc brake
to close in on the wheel's disc (thereby stopping the bike). My bike
has a disc brake in front and a drum brake in back. For more information
on hydraulic braking, there's a good explanation at
Scientific American. It's got a diagram of a car, but the mechanics are the
same.
