email me

November 27, 2001

Jerry Goodman lived on the East Coast, rode a Triumph Legend, and was a regular on the Short Biker's List. For some reason, he sticks out for me, because he always signed his name on the same line as the last line of his post, rather than underneath the text.

blah blah blah blah foo zoom blah zlarkle blah boom
zoom nerkle blah foo blah blah blah. Jerry.

He was one of those people whose email you always read, even on the days when you've got 100 email messages from five different motorcycle mailing lists. You just knew that his posts would be funny and topical. He sold cars, and while I was going through the somewhat paranoid process of figuring out how to go about buying my SVS, he sent me some nice emails explaining costs from the dealer point of view, as well as some tips on negotiating.

Jerry died on November 23.

I don't know any of the details of his accident.

Reports of other motorcyclists' deaths have found their way into my inbox over the past few years, but they've all been for people who were on the lists or in the clubs before my time. I'd never heard of them before hearing of their passings. I'd heard of Jerry. I have emails from him.

He was a good rider, an informed, intelligent, and entertaining poster, and I'll miss hearing from him. It's inconceivable to me that I'll never again open my inbox and see emails that are signed "Jerry" on the same line as the last line of the text.

In his short bio on the SBL page, he says:

I plan to ride the rest of my life. I'm not only enriched by the miles and places I ride, but most of all by the people I've met and gotten to know through motorcycling.

Godspeed, Jerry. May all your roads be well-paved twisties. :)
